Transparent window display: what it is, and when it's the wrong screen
A transparent display shows content and lets you see through it at the same time. It's a great effect in the right place. A sunny storefront window usually isn't that place, and since we don't sell them, we can say so plainly.

Two kinds of transparent display
Transparent OLED. Each pixel makes its own light. Pixels that are off are clear, so black in the content shows as glass and bright colours float in front of whatever is behind. Best for effects where the content is sparse: a product name hovering over the real product.
Transparent LCD. An LCD doesn't make light, it filters it. The transparent version needs light coming from behind, so it's usually built into a lit showcase box. White is the clear state and dark colours block the view, the reverse of OLED.
Both need content designed for them. A normal ad dropped onto a transparent screen looks like a faded poster.
Why they struggle in a sunny window
A window display has to win a fight with daylight. The panels we sell for that, like the Samsung OM46B at 4,000 nits or the OM55B at 3,000, are opaque: every bit of their light goes to the sidewalk, and nothing from the street shows through. A transparent screen gives up some of that on purpose. In a shaded mall window or a museum case, that's fine. On a south-facing street at noon, the street wins.
Before you pick one, ask where the light comes from at 2 p.m. If it's the sun, see the nits guide.
Where transparent displays do earn their place
- Showcases. A watch or a handbag inside a lit case, with the price and story on the glass in front of it.
- Interior windows. A glass partition inside a mall, office or showroom, out of direct sun.
- Effects in a flagship. One feature piece, not a rollout, and usually quoted as a project.
For a window that faces the street and has to sell all day, the opaque route is cheaper and readable. An OM55B is $2,750 today (as of October 25, 2026); compare every model on the digital window display page or the high brightness price list.
Transparent displays: questions
What is a transparent window display?
A screen you can see through when it isn't showing anything bright. Transparent LCDs and transparent OLEDs both exist. They're used for showcases and effects where the product behind the glass should stay visible.
Are transparent displays bright enough for a sunny store window?
Not for the job a window display does. A transparent panel lets daylight through by design, so in direct sun the content fades into the street behind it. For readable content in daylight, an opaque window panel like the Samsung OM55B (3,000 nits) is the tool.
What colour shows as clear on a transparent display?
It depends on the technology. On a transparent OLED, black pixels are off and show as clear. On a transparent LCD, white is the clear state and dark colours block light. Content has to be designed for the panel type.
Does DisplayDetails sell transparent displays?
No, and we won't price something we don't sell. If a transparent build is the right answer for your space, ask us and we'll tell you who we'd go to.
Is a transparent display the same as a "virtual window" screen?
No. Virtual window products are ordinary screens showing a view of outside. A transparent display is see-through hardware.
